This position provides regulatory oversight of Sand and Gravel Wastewater Permit holders in order to protect surface and ground water resources, and works under the direction of a senior level hydrogeologist and a licensed environmental engineer. We are looking for people who have familiarity with Western Washington geology and hydrology, have a basic understanding of mining processes and the water pollution control practices for the industry, possess the ability to patiently communicate with people in the mining and construction businesses, and who are able to prioritize competing work demands. Duties Agency Mission: The mission of the Department of Ecology is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington's environment, for current and future generations. Program Mission: The mission of the Water Quality Program is to protect and restore Washington's waters to support healthy watersheds and communities. Our work ensures state waters can support beneficial uses including recreational and business activities, supplies for clean drinking water, and the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and public health. The Sand and Gravel Permit Manager supports these missions as a hydrogeologist regulating mines, asphalt and concrete producers, and other related businesses to control water pollution. This work includes: Conducting and reviewing technical hydrogeological analysis Determining contaminant transport and fate Researching, evaluating, and determining geologic formations, hydraulic conductivity, and boundary conditions Interpreting and analyzing project data Conducting compliance inspections and documenting compliance status Verifying permit compliance, providing technical assistance, and evaluating impacts on ground and surface water Reviewing erosion control plans to determine compliance and acceptability This position will remain open until filled. Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree involving major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, or closely allied field. AND Two years of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, hydrologist, geologist or closely allied profession or one year as a Hydrogeologist 1. A Master's degree with major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geologist or closely allied field will substitute for the two years of experience. NOTE: This position does not require a Washington state license in geology or hydrogeology. Desired Qualifications Experience implementing state and federal water pollution laws and regulations, permit programs, and policies. Experience negotiating and applying conflict resolution skills. Experience communicating complex technical issues to non-technical audiences. Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment: Must obtain and maintain a valid driver's license. Why work for Ecology?
