Job Description:

The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Staff Hydrogeologist (Hydrogeologist 1) position at our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA. This position provides field assistance and supporting hydrogeologic analysis for groundwater studies and other technical evaluations carried out or managed by senior level hydrogeologists within the Groundwater Forest and Fish unit of Ecology's Environmental Assessment Program. In addition, this position coordinates and manages the Environmental Information Management (EIM) data submittals for groundwater level and water quality information collected by, or on behalf of, Ecology's Water Resources Program (WRP). We are looking for applicants who possess a solid working knowledge of the principals and practices of geology and hydrogeology as they relate to the quality, quantity, development, and monitoring of groundwater and surface water resources. Applicants must have the ability and interest to work in the field under potentially adverse weather conditions. The successful candidate must also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work both independently and with others in a project team setting. The Environmental Assessment Program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. Its mission is to measure and assess environmental conditions in Washington State. Some of the key work activities for this Staff Hydrogeologist (Hydrogeologist 1) position include: Under the supervision or oversight of a licensed hydrogeologist, this position serves as an entry level hydrogeologist for EAP's Groundwater Forests and Fish unit. The typical duties of this position include: Assisting with initial scoping and planning of projects and the subsequent development of project study plans and quality assurance documents (QAPP's). Providing geographic information system (GIS), statistical, or other technical support for projects. Conducting literature reviews and background research to aid project development and implementation. Preparing graphs, maps, data charts, and other visuals for project QAPPS and study reports. Performing EIM data entry and project data quality assurance reviews. Assisting other unit staff in the field with groundwater sampling and water level monitoring activities. Managing the pre-sample preparations on established longer-term projects (e.g. ordering sample supplies/equipment/materials, tag prep, submitting pre-sample notifications and bottle orders, managing field logistics and communications with well-owners). Assisting with data analysis and quality assurance reviews during the preparation of project reports. Report writing. Coordinate with regional and headquarter WRP staff to manage and process EIM data submittals that originate from WRP monitoring activities or WRP grantees. This includes: Working with regional WRP staff and grantees to process, QA, and upload groundwater level transducer data into EIM. Assist WRP regional staff with data QA and entry of manual groundwater level measurements into EIM. Serve as a resource and principal point of contact for WRP grant managers and grant recipients who oversee or generate environmental data that is intended to be entered and maintained in EIM. Performing quality assurance checks on WRP and WRP grantee data submittals prior to uploading the data to EIM. Serving as the principal WRP contact for EIM related questions and issues. Working with the Agency/program data coordinators to develop user guidelines, business rules, and self-help training materials for EIM. Working in consort with other program data coordinators, help conduct groundwater specific EIM training for groups and individuals who submit data to EIM. Representing WRP interests in the EIM User's Group. This recruitment will remain open until filled. The initial screening will be October 10, 2017. Qualifications Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree involving a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology or closely allied field. AND One year of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, hydrologist, geologist or closely allied profession or one year as a hydrogeological trainee. Advanced degrees (Master's or Ph.D.) in one of the above fields will substitute for the required experience. Desired Qualifications: Working knowledge of the principles and practices of geology and hydrogeology as they relate to the quality, quantity, development, and monitoring of groundwater and surface water resources. OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification. Experience managing and working with environmental or scientific data. Knowledge of and experience with ArcGIS software. Experience using "R'', Excel, or other software tools for scientific data analyses and presentation. Experience with relational databases such as Access or SQL Server. Groundwater monitoring field experience (e.g. measurement of GW levels, water quality sampling, installing and downloading pressure transducers, conducting aquifer tests, etc.). Good teaching or information sharing skills. Attention to detail and commitment to quality. Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment. Most possess a valid driver's license.
